Planning ahead is usually not my thing. I’m definitely one of those people that is still trying to finish their Christmas shopping the day before while trying to cook and clean on top of that. I don’t know if it’s age or what, but the last two years I’ve been wanting to give more thoughtful and useful gifts to friends and family. Last year I made batches of honey butter to give to friends along with freshly baked bread (recipe coming soon!). So when I began thinking of possiblities for this coming Christmas, vanilla extract kept popping into my mind. It’s one of those gifts you have to think about months before you want to gift it because it takes some time to steep. So come December, this extract will be ready for my friends to use and bake with.
Making this vanilla at home was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be! I’ve never worked with actual vanilla beans, and they weren’t as tricky as I imaged. I ordered all of my supplies on Amazon, and had the rum on hand. Making 10 Christmas gifts for friends without even leaving the house? Check!
HOMEMADE VANILLA EXTRACT
*This recipe makes one jar, so multiply amounts depending on how many jars you want.
2-3 Vanilla Beans
4 oz bottle
Begin by slicing the vanilla beans from one end to the other, but leave one end of the bean connected. Place the beans into the jar and fill the jar with rum. Make sure you put the cap on the jar tightly, and then give it a good shake. Tie on a cute label or gift tag, and put in a dark place for at least four weeks. Make sure you give the bottles a good shake about once a week, and then again right before you gift it.
Gifting tip: Bake some cookies, a pie, or muffins with a cute recipe card attached to give along with your homemade vanilla! Your friend will love you.
